These are some examples when MDF comes in contact with water. Very clearly, they are not fond of each other.

Just like some people, they might look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside, they are bad hearted.
Similar to racks using metal hollow tube as their support, rust will corrode the inner side of it. Although still looking all good and shiny on the outside, you wouldn't want to put anything heavy on it when you look inside.
Lesson: Don't be blinded by the beauty of the surface, what's on the inside is always more important
